Christopher Halliwell, 52, who is accused of murdering 20-year-old Becky Godden and burying her headless body in a remote field, cross-examined former Detective Sergeant Steve Fulcher at Bristol Crown Court.
Becky's body was found in Eastleach, Gloucestershire.
Mr Fulcher told jurors that Halliwell had admitted killing Becky, but said he could not remember when.
The detective also said Halliwell claimed to have buried his victim in a 5ft grave - but the victim was found in a grave which was six to eight inches deep.
Defending himself, Halliwell cross-examined Mr Fulcher in the witness box at Bristol Crown Court.
Mr Fulcher said he believed Halliwell had mixed up his victims.
A convicted killer told the detective investigating him for a second murder in court today: 'It was a pleasure ruining your career, you corrupt b*stard.'
Halliwell is serving a life sentence with a minimum term of 25 years after admitting stabbing Sian O'Callaghan, 22, to death in 2011.
The detective told the accused, who is defending himself: 'You couldn't remember whether it was three or four or five which led me to conclude that there were other victims.'
