While in public Jose is the outspoken, charismatic star; at home it’s a rather different story. Once he steps through the front door everything changes. Suddenly he’s a mere mortal and he wouldn’t have it any other way.
He told me: ‘(At home) I’m treated like what I am: a husband, a father. I’m normal. I do what I can do. I don’t do things I’m a disgrace at doing.
‘I can’t cook, for example; I don’t need to clean but I love to go to the supermarket to do the shopping or go with my kids to do things they like to do, to go to a movie and help with homework. I love to be normal.’
The man makes no secret that the love of his life is his wife Matilde. He calls her ‘Tami’, but also affectionately describes her as the mother hen of the family. They met as teenagers and still behave like it at times — as in 2013 when Tami had a tattoo and challenged her husband to do likewise.
He did, having her nickname and those of his children inked on to his left wrist.
There’s no confusion about the secret behind their long and loving relationship. In one interview Mourinho summed it up, saying: ‘My wife trusts me, my wife knows me.
'She has been with me since I was 17 and she was 15. ‘Everything is so crystal clear for us. I have my professional work and I have my family life. I am not the kind of guy with a social life and I am so happy the way I am.
‘The secret in everything is love. If you are successful in football, it is because you love football.
'If you are successful in any job, I believe it is because you are in love with that job and if you have a successful family it is because people are in love with each other. Love is the basic.’
