Shooting Stars Sports Club (3SC) centre-back, Joseph Izu, has died in his hometown, Okarki, on Sunday, a club official confirmed.
The defender was on holidays in his hometown after finishing the Nigeria Professional Football League (NPFL) season with 3SC when he was killed.
A handful of reports in Nigeria suggest that the energetic defender was hit by a stray bullet while others say he was shot dead by security men on operation in his hometown.
"We received the news of Izu's death with shock," 3SC spokesman, Jubril Arowolo, told supersport.com on Monday.
"Right now we cannot make any further comment on this development. We will do so in official capacity later today."

Izu featured prominently for 3SC in the just-concluded NPFL season and helped the club to avoid the drop as they finished the campaign in 15th position.
The defender also scored twice in the season and in his last appearance on NPFL final day started on the bench at Abia Warriors.
