Luius Suarez was close to a done deal of £400,001 weekly?

Arsene Wenger has revealed Arsenal had an agreement in place with Luis Suarez during his failed 2013 transfer.

The Suarez transfer saga is well remembered, not least for Arsenal's infamous bid of £40,000,001 as they tried to prise the forward away from Liverpool in summer 2013.

Liverpool owner John Henry tweeted, 'What are they smoking over there at the Emirates?' when Arsenal tried to activate a clause in Suarez's contract by bidding an extra £1.

And Arsenal boss Wenger has revealed that Suarez nearly joined the north London club.

He told beINSports: 'He was very close (to signing for Arsenal). We had an agreement with the player. We had been wrongly advised that he had a clause, with a minimal clause, but we had an agreement with the player. You can ask him.

'I'm convinced he wanted to join us and then they sold him. They kept him one more year, improved his contract and promised to sell him the year later to a club abroad.'

Suarez was hit with a ban prior to that summer for biting Chelsea player Branislav Ivanovic.
