The government of the Turks and Caicos Islands has declared a national emergency as the category five storm moves northwest.
Strong, life-threatening winds of up to 175 miles per hour, rain and storm surge are expected to affect the island into tomorrow.
Irma has killed at least 14 people across the Caribbean, as well as created a large amount of destruction across several islands, particularly Barbuda and the British Virgin Islands.
Sharon Flax-Brutus, director of tourism for the Virgin Islands, said the storm had been “devastating”, highlighting that many structures had been decimated or brought to their foundations.
She pointed out communication between the islands had been heavily affected as the storm had knocked out phone towers.
The storm is expected to make landfall in Puerto Rico, Cuba and Florida this week.
