An Instagram post showing a screenshot of a rape threat one woman received was inadvertently turned into an advert promoting the photo-sharing app because of Facebook’s algorithms.
Olivia Solon, a journalist, was shocked when she saw the photo, featuring the violent threat which said:’ Olivia, you f***ing bitch!!!!!!! I Will Rape You’, as an ad for Instagram, the Guardian report.
The photo-sharing app had selected the screenshot, which was posted nearly a year ago, to promote Instagram to Miss Solon’s sister this week with the message: ‘See Olivia Solon’s photo and posts from friends on Instagram’.
It is unclear why this particular post was chosen but it could possibly be Instagram’s algorithm considering it an ‘engaging’ post because it received more than a dozen comments.
