Jose Mourinho has fired a stark warning to his players that they'll face the same treatment as Luke Shaw and Chris Smalling if they show similar weakness during his reign.
Shaw and Smalling were condemned by the Manchester United boss, in private and publicly, after they informed the Portuguese they weren't fit enough to play against Swansea on Sunday ‒ with Mourinho accusing the England pair of lacking mental toughness.
The duo are now facing a fight to save their United careers with Mourinho furious the defenders were unwilling to put their bodies on the line at the Liberty Stadium.
And the United boss has told his players in no uncertain terms that he will not take kindly to similar circumstances in the future.
Mourinho remains convinced he will return United to their former glories despite a difficult start to the season.
He believes it's part of the transitional process and his team will sooner or later become a force.
And the United boss has told his players they will not be part of the club's successful period if they do not grit their teeth through their current inconsistent patch.
Mourinho was delighted with Phil Jones' attitude at Swansea on Sunday, the defender making his first competitive appearance since January due to injury.
The England international had completed just a handful of training sessions before starting the win over Bob Bradley's side.
