Netflix spent £100m on the period drama, and preempted interest in a second series - all before it was unveiled to the public.

But The Crown's lead actress Claire Foy has explained why viewers have been as gripped by the royal insight as anticipated, saying that Queen Elizabeth's early marriage was a 'battleground.'

The first series details the power struggle between Elizabeth and her new husband Prince Phillip (played by Matt Smith) when she is thrust into leading the country. Photos below.
