The 27-year-old Finn will replace world champion, Nico Rosberg, who stunned the sporting world by announcing his retirement just five days after winning the title at the Abu Dhabi Grand Prix in November.
Bottas has long been favourite to land the fastest seat in Formula One because he is managed by Mercedes team principal Toto Wolff and all the other leading contenders for the job – Sebastian Vettel, of Ferrari, first among them – are locked into contracts at their existing teams.
