Jose Mourinho has accused the FA of failing to look after Wayne Rooney in the wake of the England captain’s latest brush with controversy.
All eyes will be on Rooney when Manchester United face Arsenal at Old Trafford on Saturday after the 31-year-old got drunk at a wedding reception while on international duty last weekend.
And United manager Mourinho has waded into the issue by suggesting England need to take greater care of their most high-profile player. Mourinho said: ‘The only thing I say is that when a player goes to the national team, he belongs to the national team. I learned since I was a kid, if someone lends me something I have to take care even better than if it was mine.
‘Since school, you know, your friend lent you a pencil so you have to take care of the pencil better than if it was your pencil.
‘So I think when one day if I become a national team manager, I will try.’
Mourinho tried not to get drawn too deeply into the controversy on Friday and followed up his comments by suggesting he didn’t blame England manager Gareth Southgate, who tried to persuade Rooney to call it a night at 11pm.
He added: ‘I am not saying that I will always be successful on that myself, and I am not being critical of Gary [sic] or anyone.
