British hairdresser killed herself in Ibiza after she had a string of alcohol-fuelled arguments with her boyfriend on the party island, and inquest heard.

Cara Keirl, 28, spent most of the trip on the Balearic Island having rows with her partner James Kane.

He flew home alone five days into the holiday after one particularly nasty fight between them in their hotel room.

Cara was found hanged the following day by a chambermaid and it is thought she had been lying dead in her room at the Cartago Hotel in Puerto de San Miguel for up to 16 hours.

Her younger sister Abigail said Cara had called her crying on June 7 to say she was having problems with her boyfriend, with whom she had an 'intense' relationship.

Cara's mother Cheryl Kenney said she had spoken to her daughter every day since she had arrived in Ibiza.

Their last conversation was at 1am on June 9 - just hours before she hanged herself.

She said her daughter complained that her boyfriend had been hitting her and they had had physical fights.

In a statement, Mr Kane said he had begun a relationship with Cara in 2014 and later moved into her home with her parents in Worcester.

He said: 'I'm aware she had problems in the past. I believe she was a crack cocaine user but managed to get off the drug by locking herself in her parents' house.

'As far as I'm aware she didn't use any Class A drugs during our relationship.'

He described Cara as 'very fragile' and said she used alcohol as a 'crutch', sometimes downing three bottles of wine in one sitting.

Mr Kane added: 'Some time during 2013 she tried to take her own life - she was living with her parents at the time.

'We moved out of the family home during February 2015 and had financial problems from the outset.

'Cara was very stressed and wasn't working much. She was a very good hairdresser but was struggling to see her clients as a result.'

He said that if he were to rate her physical violence towards him during their fights it would be a three or four out of ten, but during their altercation in Ibiza it was ten out of ten.

The pair began drinking at 11am the morning after they arrived and Cara was 'very drunk', so he left her at the bar and went to get a soft drink.

When he went back to find her said she was talking to her mum on the phone, saying she 'might as well be on holiday on her own'.

At midnight he said he spotted her 'hammered' in a bar and they went back to their hotel room where a fight broke out about their families.

Cara bit his finger hard and hit him with a can of hair spray before pinning him against the wall, at which point he kicked out at her upper leg, he said.

Mr Kane, who has two children, said he had to leave her to 'safeguard' himself because he might be accused of doing all sorts of things to Cara if he stayed.

He packed his bags on June 8 and spent ten hours waiting for a flight home at the airport before travelling back to the UK.

He said: 'I was messaging Cara and trying to persuade her to come home.

'She called me and stated that she didn't believe I was in the UK. This was the last time I spoke to her.'

A post-mortem found bruises on her shoulders, arms and legs. She also had 1..44 grams per litre of alcohol in her system.

Mr Kane said he was unable to work for 18 months after the death of Cara, from Warmley, South Gloucestershire.

He added: 'Cara was the most inspiring and uplifting person. There isn't a day that goes by that I don't think of her.'

Assistant Avon and Somerset Coroner Dr Peter Harrowing said: 'I am satisfied beyond reasonable doubt that Cara did carry out an act with the intention to take her life.'
